Welcome Parents! My name is Carrie Stegvik and the 2009/2010 school year will be my second as PTO President of Hough Street School. I can’t say enough how happy I am to be working with the wonderful staff and parents at Hough. My husband, Arne, and I have lived in Barrington for 13 years, right around the corner from school. We have two daughters – Johanna, who will be entering 6th grade at Prairie Middle School and Julia, who will be in 3rd grade. It was hard for Johanna to leave the wonderful embrace of Hough and venture out into a larger school, but I know that her 6 years here have prepared her well. The PTO is very excited to welcome our new principal, Mrs. Lori Wilcox! Lori comes to us from Oak Grove School in Oak Grove, Illinois, where she had served as the K-8 Cirriculum Director as well as Prinicpal for 4th and 5th grades. Prior to her years at Oak Grove, she had been a classroom teacher in North Shore District 112. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree at National Louis University. There will many chances to meet Mrs. Wilcox: during our New Parent Night on August 20th at 7:00 p.m.in the Hough gym; at the Back-to-School BBQ on August 27th at 5:30 p.m. in the Hough gym, and at Back-to-School Night on September 9th at 7:00 p.m., also in the Hough gym. The PTO would also like to welcome all of our new families. Coming to a new school is both exciting and overwhelming and we’d like to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Again, our New Parent Night is on Thursday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m. In addition to meeting Mrs. Wilcox, new parents will learn all about Hough Street School, and have all of their questions answered. The Hough Street School PTO is made up of Hough parents that volunteer their time and talent to oversee many of the activities that the PTO provides, including fund raisers, family social activities and student enrichment opportunities. All of our fund raising proceeds go toward providing Hough with items (such as Smart Boards, Brain Game Carts, and LCD projectors) and programs (such as author visits and assembilies) that help make our school a special place for our students to learn and grow. Our PTO meetings are held on the first Friday of every month at 9:30 a.m. at the Barrington Area Public Library, usually in the Zimmerman Room. Our first meeting of the year will be held on Friday, September 4. We encourage all parents to attend. Bring your own coffee and we’ll provide the treats! There is room for young children in the back of the Zimmerman Room. Please bring your own toys. PTO meetings are where parents can learn about what is happening in the school and around the district. We welcome your questions, comments and feedback at these meetings as well. The meeting schedule and room locations for the 2009-2010 school year can be found on the PTO website at www.houghpto.org under the tab “About Us” and “Meeting Schedule”. If you are interested in becoming a Room Parent or volunteering for one of the many PTO Committees, look for the PTO sign-up packet that will come home the first week of school. We encourage everyone to attend as many PTO meetings as possible and to volunteer at least 1 hour of their time to the PTO. It makes all of the difference in your child's experience at Hough Street School. Do yourself a favor and mark the PTO website listed above as one of your “favorites”. It is THE place to go to find out everything happening at Hough Street School. You’ll also want to check your email for the monthly Hough newsletter, which is full of information about what is going on around school and the latest PTO events. This is sent via email to all families. I look forward to seeing everyone soon and wish you all a wonderful year! Carrie Stegvik PTO President
